Smriti Mandhana Shines Like Virat Kohli in WPL: A Tale of Redemption and Dominance

From Struggles to Success, Mandhana's Batting Brilliance Sparks Comparisons

Mumbai: Indian women’s cricket sensation Smriti Mandhana’s stellar performance in WPL, is making waves with and earning comparisons to Virat Kohli.

Struggles and Redemption

Mandhana struggled during the WPL’s inaugural season and has been on a roll in the ongoing second edition. In three matches, she has scored 130 runs at an impressive average of 43.

On Wednesday, the left-hander was in sublime touch against Delhi Capitals, smashing 74 runs off just 43 balls, including ten fours and three sixes. However, the lack of support from her Royal Challengers Bangalore teammates meant her lone efforts were unsuccessful.

Dominant Batting Display by Delhi Capitals

Opting to bat first, Delhi posted a daunting 194/4 in their 20 overs. Indian opener Shafali Verma gave them a flying start with a 31-ball 50 studded with four sixes and three fours.

Shafali got support from Alice Capsey, who made 46 off 33 balls. Late blitzes from Marizanne Kapp (32 off 16) and Jessica Jonnsen (36 off 16) helped Delhi set a huge target. In response, Mandhana immediately attacked, bludgeoning the Delhi bowlers to all parts of the ground. RCB raced to 50 in just five overs due to Mandhana’s belligerence.

However, her dismissal for 74 derailed RCB’s chase. None of the other batters contributed substantially, with Meg Lanning’s 36 being the next-best score. Eventually, RCB fell short by 25 runs, finishing on 169/9.

Comparisons to Virat Kohli

Mandhana’s striking form has drawn comparisons to Kohli’s redemption in IPL 2009 after a lacklustre debut season. Like her, Kohli also recorded his first IPL fifty against Delhi in the third match of Season 2.

Kohli built on that innings to become one of the all-time IPL greats. Fans are excited to see if Mandhana can achieve similar success after overcoming her initial struggles. Her performances will be keenly followed as she looks to guide RCB to the playoffs this WPL season.

Smriti Mandhana has flipped a switch this WPL season, with her batting capturing the imagination of fans. Her brilliant 74 against the Delhi Capitals indicates she has finally adjusted to the league after initial hiccups. If Mandhana can sustain this form, she can propel RCB to a playoff spot and even title glory. Her rise will also boost Indian women’s cricket as Kohli’s success lifted the men’s team. Comparisons between the two modern greats are inevitable, but Mandhana is carving her path. Win or lose, her fighting spirit embodies women breaking barriers. Mandhana inspires a generation to dream big as she continues scaling new heights.
