The researchers published a pioneering study in Myoclinic Proceedings: Digital Health under the title “Acoustic Analysis and Prediction of type 2 Diabetes Mellitus using smartphone-recorded voice segments.” The research involved 342 participants, including 267 individuals without diabetes (79 women and 113 men) and 75 diagnosed with diabetes (18 women and 57 men). Notably, all participants were of Indian descent.
As part of the experiment, each participant recorded a specific sentence six times daily for two weeks using their smartphone’s voice recorder. This process generated a massive dataset of 18,465 individual voice recordings. The researchers discovered clear patterns by feeding this data into the AI system and comparing 14 key vocal biomarkers. These patterns allowed the AI to distinguish between those with and without diabetes.
The researchers concluded, based on their rigorous analysis, that AI can accurately detect and predict diabetes by analyzing a person’s voice recording. Their groundbreaking work demonstrates the immense potential for voice-based AI technology. It can be applied as an early screening and diagnostic tool for diabetes. This approach would save patients considerable time and money.
