West Bengal Minister Arrested in PDS Scam: Allegations of Conspiracy Surface

Enforcement Directorate Detains Jyoti Priya Mullick Amid Controversy and Accusations in High-Profile Case

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has arrested West Bengal Minister Jyoti Priya Mullick for his alleged involvement in a scam related to the State’s public distribution system (PDS). The ED raided eight of his properties for almost 20 hours before arresting him on Friday, October 27, 2023.

Mr. Mullick, who was the State’s Food and Supplies Minister, claimed that he was a victim of a conspiracy. He accused the BJP and the Leader of Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari, of being behind his arrest. He made these allegations while being taken from his home in Salt Lake to the ED office in Kolkata. He repeated them when he was taken for a medical check-up later that day.

He is the second minister of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) to be arrested by the ED this year. In June, the ED had arrested former Education Minister Partha Chatterjee for his role in a school job recruitment scam. Many other TMC MLAs and State Education Department officials are also in jail for the same scam.

On Thursday, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, condemned the ED raids on Mr. Mullick’s properties. She had said that Mr. Mullick was unwell and that she would file an FIR against the ED and the BJP if anything happened to him during the raids.

The PDS scam case dates back to 2020-21 when some FIRs were filed at various police stations in the State for irregularities in the distribution of food grains and other essential items to people experiencing poverty. The State police investigated the case and handed it over to the ED. The ED had also arrested a businessman named Bakibur Rehman last week in connection with the same case. The ED had discovered properties worth about ₹100 crore in his name. He is said to be a close associate of Mr. Mullick.
