TMC MP Mahua Moitra slams BJP for planning criminal cases against her

A fearless parliamentarian takes on political controversy and personal attacks

Mahua Moitra, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying to silence her by filing criminal cases against her. She said that she was not afraid of their intimidation and threats and that she would continue to expose their corruption and misgovernance.

Moitra is one of the most vocal critics of the BJP and its leader, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She has been raising questions in the Lok Sabha about the Adani Group, a business conglomerate owned by billionaire Gautam Adani, who is a close friend of Modi.

She has alleged that the Adani Group has been involved in a Rs 13,000 crore coal scam, where it imported coal from Indonesia at inflated prices and sold it to Indian power plants at even higher prices, making huge profits at the expense of the public. She has also alleged that the Modi government granted an extraordinary favor to the Adani Group by allowing it to mine from a coal block holding more than 450 million tonnes of coal in one of India’s densest forest patches, even after the Supreme Court had canceled the allocations of 204 coal blocks in 2014, citing illegalities and lack of transparency.

The Adani Group has denied any wrongdoing and said it follows the law of the land in all its operations. It has also said that the allegations are politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing its reputation.
However, Moitra’s questions have irked the BJP, which has accused her of taking bribes from businessman Darshan Hiranandani to target the Adani Group. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has claimed that Hiranandani used Moitra’s parliamentary login ID to file questions from different places, mostly Dubai.

Moitra has admitted that she shared her login details with Hiranandani, a friend and a well-wisher, but has denied any financial considerations. She has asserted that most MPs share their login credentials with others and that there is nothing illegal or unethical about it.

Recently, she appeared before the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee in connection with the “cash for query” allegations against her. During the hearing, she was subjected to demeaning and irrelevant questions by the ethics committee chairperson, BJP MP Vinod Kumar Sonkar. He asked her about her travels, hotel stays, and telephone calls as if she was a criminal suspect. He also insinuated that she had a personal relationship with Hiranandani, which is none of his business.

Moitra was so outraged by his behavior that she stormed out of the meeting, along with the other opposition members, who also protested against his conduct. She later alleged that she was subjected to a “proverbial vastraharan” in the meeting, referencing the Hindu epic Mahabharata, where the villainous Kauravas tried to disrobe the virtuous Draupadi in public.

The next day, she tweeted that she was “shaking in my skin” to know that the BJP was planning to file criminal cases against her. She also challenged them to file an FIR against Adani for the coal scam before they questioned how many pairs of shoes she had.

Moitra said that she was not afraid of the BJP’s criminal cases against her, as she knew that they were nothing but a witch-hunt to silence her and other dissenting voices. She said they were a diversionary tactic to hide their corruption and misgovernance. She said that they were a sign of their desperation and fear of losing power.

Moitra said she would not bow down to their intimidation and threats and continue to speak the truth and expose their lies. She said she would continue to fight for the rights and interests of the people of India and uphold the values of democracy and secularism.

She is confident that she has the support of her party, her leader Mamata Banerjee, and millions of Indians who were fed up with the BJP’s authoritarian and divisive rule. She called every like-minded to join together and defeat the BJP and its cronies in the upcoming elections and restore the dignity and glory of our nation.
