The Political Shockwave: Sadhvi Anadi Saraswati’s Game-Changing Switch to Congress in Rajasthan

Unpacking the Implications for the Upcoming Elections and the Battle for Hindu Voters

Sadhvi Anadi Saraswati is a well-known Hindu activist who used to be a leader of the BJP. But on Thursday, November 2, 2023, she shocked everyone by joining the Congress party. She was welcomed by the Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, and other senior Congress leaders in Jaipur.

Why did she do that? And what does it mean for the upcoming Rajasthan Assembly elections? Let’s find out.

Who is Sadhvi Anadi Saraswati?

Sadhvi Anadi Saraswati is not her real name. She was born as Mamta Kalani in Sindh, a province of Pakistan. She belongs to the Sindhi community, a minority group in India. She moved to India when she was young and became a Hindu preacher.

She is famous for her strong views on Hindu issues, such as cow protection, Ram temple, and anti-conversion laws. She has also praised Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, for his style of governance.

She joined the BJP in 2018 and became one of its prominent faces in Rajasthan. She wanted to contest the Ajmer North seat in the Rajasthan Assembly elections, which will be held on November 25.

Why did she leave the BJP?

However, the BJP did not give her the ticket for the Ajmer North seat. Instead, they chose Vasudev Devnani, who is already an MLA from that seat and has won it thrice. Devnani is also a Hindu leader with a good reputation among the voters.

Sadhvi Anadi Saraswati was unhappy with this decision and felt betrayed by the BJP. She decided to quit the party and join the Congress, which offered her a better deal.

What does it mean for the Congress?

The Congress is happy to have Sadhvi Anadi Saraswati in their party. They think she can help them attract more Hindu voters in Rajasthan, especially after they faced criticism for being too soft on minorities in the past. The Congress has been trying to show that they are also pro-Hindu by doing things like setting up cow shelters, distributing free copies of the Bhagavad Gita, and organizing Ramayana recitals.

The Congress has yet to announce who will be their candidate for the Ajmer North seat. But they might give it to Sadhvi Anadi Saraswati so that she can fight against Devnani. If that happens, it will be a tough contest between two Hindu leaders in a seat that has many Muslim voters.

What does it mean for the BJP?

The BJP is not happy to lose Sadhvi Anadi Saraswati. They think she is a traitor who has betrayed their ideology and party. They also believe she will not be able to win over the Congress voters, who might not like her extreme views on some issues. For example, she once said that those who eat beef should be hanged in public. She also supported the CAA and NRC, which many Congress leaders opposed.

The BJP is confident that Devnani will win the Ajmer North seat again, as he has done before. They also hope that Sadhvi Anadi Saraswati’s switch will not affect their overall performance in the Rajasthan Assembly elections.

What will happen next?

The Rajasthan Assembly elections are crucial for both the Congress and the BJP. The Congress currently rules the state with 107 seats out of 200, while the BJP has 72 seats. Smaller parties and independents hold the rest. The results will be declared in December.

Sadhvi Anadi Saraswati’s switch might change the game in some seats. Still, it might make a slight difference in the overall outcome. It will depend on how well both parties campaign and connect with the voters.

We will have to wait and see what happens next.
