Hazare’s Critique of Kejriwal: A Rift in Principles

Disagreements over Alcohol Policy and Political Choices

New Delhi: Gandhian activist Anna Hazare Criticizes Kejriwal, who was recently arrested in a liquor policy case. Hazare quipped that he and Kejriwal had previously raised their voices against liquor. Still, Kejriwal later introduced a separate policy for liquor sales. Hazare added that this made him very sad, and Kejriwal is now suffering the consequences of his actions.

Kejriwal was once a follower of Anna Hazare. The two had led the anti-corruption movement during the UPA regime. However, Hazare strongly opposed Kejriwal’s decision to form the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Subsequently, their paths diverged. Kejriwal gained prominence in national politics by initially utilizing Hazare’s support. Hazare also opposed the formation of the AAP and has been constantly criticizing Kejriwal.

Allegations and Accusations

Hazare said in Ahmednagar, “I am very upset that Arvind Kejriwal, who raised his voice against liquor, is now making liquor policies. His arrest is due to his own actions.” Hazare had earlier criticized the Delhi government’s liquor policy.

In a letter to Arvind Kejriwal, Hazare stated that power is intoxicating like alcohol. Instead of bringing strong Lokpal or anti-corruption laws, Kejriwal has implemented policies against people, especially against women, Hazare alleged.

He claimed that liquor shops are opening on every corner of Delhi, and AAP workers are in a frenzy to grab money and power. Hazare also said what was going on in AAP was more than just a one-party thing resulting from great volunteer work.
