Mizoram Election Candidates: Millionaires, Mistakes, and Records

Wealth Disparities, Asset Errors, and Noteworthy Candidates in Upcoming Polls

According to their affidavits, the Mizoram assembly elections have 112 candidates out of 174 who are millionaires. The wealthiest candidate is Andrew Lalremkima Pachuau, the state president of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), who has assets worth Rs 68.93 crore. He is running from the Aizawl North-III seat.

Pachuau is followed by R Vanlaltluanga of Congress, who has assets worth Rs 55.6 crore and is contesting from the Serchhip seat. The third richest candidate is H Ginzalala of Zoram People’s Movement, who has assets worth Rs 36.9 crore and is contesting from the Champhai North seat. All of them have business as their source of income.

The poorest candidate is Ramhlun-Edena, an independent who has movable assets worth Rs 1,500 and is contesting from the Serchhip seat.
A BJP candidate, JB Rualchhinga, who is contesting from Lawngtlai West seat, wrongly declared his assets worth Rs 90.32 crore in his affidavit. The party has asked the election department to correct it.

In the last assembly elections 2018, the wealthiest candidate was Lalrinenga Sailo of MNF, who had assets worth Rs 100 crore and contested from the Hachhek seat. His party colleague Robert Romawia Royte, who contested from Aizawl East-II seat, had assets worth Rs 44 crore. However, their investments have now reduced to Rs 26.24 crore and Rs 32.24 crore respectively.

Among the 16 women candidates, the richest is Meriam L. Hrangchal of Congress, who has assets worth Rs 18.63 crore and is contesting from the Lunglei South seat.

The chief minister and MNF president, Zoramthanga, is the richest among the five party leaders in the fray. He has assets worth Rs 5 crore and is contesting from Aizawl East-I seat.

The chief ministerial candidate of ZPM, Lalduhoma, who is contesting from the Serchhip seat, has assets worth Rs 4 crore.

The Congress president Lalsawta, who is contesting from Aizawl West-III seat, has assets worth Rs 6 crore.

The BJP president, Vanlalhmuaka, contesting from the Dampa seat, has assets worth Rs 31.31 lakh.

Five candidates have criminal cases pending against them. Three are from ZPM, and one is from MNF and BJP.

In the 2018 elections, nine candidates had criminal cases pending against them. They included Zoramthanga and former chief minister Lal Thanhawla.

The oldest candidate is Deputy Chief Minister Tawnpui of MNF, who is 80 years old and is contesting from the Tuichang seat for the second time.
The youngest candidates are Lalruatfeli Hlawndo, an independent woman candidate contesting from two seats, and F Vanhmingthanga of BJP. They are both 31 years old.
