Padmaja Venugopal Makes Headlines by Joining BJP

Former Congress Leader's Defection Shakes Up Political Landscape in Kerala

New Delhi: Padmaja Venugopal, the daughter of former Chief Minister K. Karunakaran, has crossed over to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). According to reports, she is poised to formally embrace her new party affiliation tomorrow by accepting membership at BJP headquarters. Padmaja’s decision to switch sides is perceived as a significant blow to the Congress party, particularly in Kerala. She served as the secretary of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC).

The defection is pivotal as Congress prepares for its Lok Sabha election campaign. While rumours regarding Padmaja’s potential move to the BJP have been circulating since she arrived in Delhi, she had initially refuted such speculation.

It is speculated that Padmaja Venugopal engaged in discussions with central BJP leaders and other party officials. And laying the groundwork for her transition to the saffron party. Notably, her relationship with the Congress had soured in recent years. She was aware of the unlikelihood of securing a ticket to contest the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Electoral Challenges and Frustrations

Padmaja’s electoral journey has been fraught with challenges. Despite contesting from the Mukundapuram constituency in the 2004 Lok Sabha elections, she faced defeat at the hands of Lonappan Nambatan. Similarly, her attempts to secure a Thrissur Assembly seat in 2016 and 2021 were unsuccessful. Consequently, she has frequently accused the party of working against her interests and orchestrating her defeats.

Consequences of Kerala’s Political Landscape

Meanwhile, efforts by Congress leaders to reach out to Padmaja during her stay in Delhi following reports of her potential defection proved fruitless.

Padmaja’s decision will affect the electoral prospects of sitting MP K. Muraleedharan. He is gearing up to contest as the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate from the Vadakara constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

When confronted with rumours about her joining the BJP, Padmaja strongly refuted the claims. In her own words, she stated, “I heard news in some media that I am joining the BJP, and I don’t know where it came from. This news was denied to me when a channel asked about it. I still strongly deny it.”

She added, “They asked me if I will go in the future; I said jokingly, ‘I can’t tell you about today; how can I tell you about tomorrow?’ I didn’t think it would turn out like this.”
