Rajasthan Election 2023: The Battle for State Supremacy

Congress vs. BJP - High-Stakes Politics, Power, and Prestige

The Rajasthan Assembly Election 2023 is one of India’s most critical and exciting political events this year. It is a battle between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP to control the 200-member state assembly. The election will be held on November 25, and the results will be declared on December 31.

The election is crucial for both parties, as it will significantly impact their prospects in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in 2024. The Congress, led by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, is fighting to retain power in the state. In contrast, the BJP, led by former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, hopes to regain its lost ground.

The Congress has been ruling Rajasthan since 2018 when it defeated the BJP under the leadership of Gehlot. The party has been focusing on its achievements in development, welfare schemes, COVID-19 management, and law and order. The party has also been projecting Gehlot as a popular and efficient leader who has delivered on his promises.

The BJP has been in opposition since 2018 when it lost power after five years of rule under Raje. The party has criticized the Congress government for betraying the people’s mandate and snatching power through unethical means. The party has also accused the Congress of failing to tackle unemployment, inflation, farmers’ distress, and crime against women. The party has also promised to restore good governance, development, and security in the state.

High-voltage rallies, personal attacks, and allegations of corruption and misgovernance by both parties have marked the election campaign. The BJP has highlighted its achievements at the center under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. The party has also tried to woo the voters with star campaigners like Amit Shah, Yogi Adityanath, Smriti Irani, and Jyotiraditya Scindia.

The Congress has been countering the BJP’s claims with its achievements at the state level under Gehlot’s leadership. The party has also been trying to attract voters with its star campaigners like Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Sachin Pilot, Digvijaya Singh, and Shashi Tharoor.

The election is expected to be a close contest between the two parties, as both have strengths and weaknesses. The Congress has the advantage of being in power at the state and the center, having a solid organizational network, and having a charismatic leader like Gehlot. The party also enjoys the support of various caste and community groups like Dalits, Muslims, Jats, Gujjars, Meenas, etc.

The BJP has an edge of having a loyal voter base among the upper castes, traders, urban voters, etc. The party has veteran leaders like Raje, Gulab Chand Kataria, Rajendra Rathore, etc., with experience and popularity in different regions. The party also hopes to benefit from the anti-incumbency factor against the Congress.

The election is also likely to witness exciting contests between prominent candidates from both parties. Some of them are:

  • Ashok Gehlot vs Vasundhara Raje: The two chief ministerial contenders will face each other in the Sardarpura constituency in the Jodhpur district. Gehlot has been representing this seat since 1998 and has won it six times. Raje has decided to challenge him from this seat to symbolize her confidence and aggression.
  • Sachin Pilot vs Gajendra Singh Shekhawat: The two young leaders will clash in Tonk constituency in Tonk district. Pilot is a former deputy chief minister and a former state Congress president. Shekhawat is a Union minister and a close aide of Modi.
  • Shashi Tharoor vs Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore: The two former Union ministers will compete in Jaipur Rural constituency in Jaipur district. Tharoor is a senior Congress leader and a renowned author. Rathore is a BJP leader and an Olympic medalist.
  • Jyotiraditya Scindia vs Digvijaya Singh: The two former colleagues turned rivals will fight in the Shivpuri constituency in Shivpuri district. Scindia, a BJP leader, defected from the Congress along with 22 MLAs in Madhya Pradesh last year. Singh is a senior Congress leader and a former Madhya Pradesh chief minister.

The Rajasthan Election 2023 is a high-stakes and high-drama affair that will decide the fate of the state and the nation. The voters of Rajasthan have a tough choice to make between the Congress and the BJP, who are leaving no stone unturned to woo them. The election will also test the popularity and credibility of the leaders of both parties, who are putting their reputations and careers on the line. The election will also set the tone and mood for the next Lok Sabha polls, just a few months away.

The Rajasthan Election 2023 is not just a contest but a spectacle of power and prestige.
