Madhya Pradesh Election 2023: What’s at Stake and Who’s Ahead?

A Deep Dive into the Battle Between BJP and Congress for State Supremacy

The Madhypradesh Election 2023 is one of India’s most critical and exciting political events this year. It is a battle between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition Indian National Congress (INC) to control the 230-member state assembly. The election will be held in a single phase on November 17, and the results will be declared on December 31.

The election is crucial for both parties, as it will significantly impact their prospects in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in 2024. The BJP, led by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, is seeking a fourth consecutive term in power. In contrast, the Congress, led by former Chief Minister Kamal Nath, hopes to regain its lost ground.

The BJP has been ruling Madhypradesh since 2003 when it defeated the Congress under the leadership of Uma Bharti. Since then, Shivraj Singh Chouhan has been the chief minister for three terms, except for a brief period in 2020, when he had to resign after 22 Congress MLAs defected to the BJP along with Jyotiraditya Scindia2. The BJP then formed the government with Chouhan as the chief minister again.

On the other hand, the Congress has been struggling to revive its fortunes in Madhya Pradesh, which was once its stronghold. The party formed the government in 2018, after 15 years of BJP rule, with Kamal Nath as the chief minister. However, the government collapsed in March 2020 after Scindia and his loyalists switched sides to the BJP2. The Congress then accused the BJP of engineering defections and toppling its government.

High-voltage rallies, personal attacks, and allegations of corruption and misgovernance by both parties have marked the election campaign. The BJP has been highlighting its achievements in development, welfare schemes, COVID-19 management, and law and order. The party has also been projecting Chouhan as a popular and efficient leader who has delivered his promises.

The Congress has criticized the BJP for betraying the people’s mandate and snatching power through unethical means. The party has also accused the BJP of failing to tackle unemployment, inflation, farmers’ distress, and crime against women. The party has also promised to restore democracy, secularism, and social justice in the state.

The election is expected to be a close contest between the two parties, as both have strengths and weaknesses. The BJP has the advantage of being in power at both the state and the center, having a solid organizational network, and having a charismatic leader like Chouhan. The party also enjoys the support of Scindia and his followers, who have considerable influence in some regions.

The Congress has an edge of having a loyal voter base among the minorities, Dalits, tribals, and farmers. The party also has veteran leaders like Kamal Nath, Digvijaya Singh, Suresh Pachouri, and Arun Yadav, with experience and popularity in different areas. The party also hopes to benefit from the anti-incumbency factor against the BJP.

The election is also likely to witness exciting contests between prominent candidates from both parties. Some of them are:

  • Shivraj Singh Chouhan vs Kamal Nath: The two chief ministerial contenders will face each other in Budhni constituency in Sehore district. Chouhan has been representing this seat since 1990 and has won it six times. Nath has decided to challenge him from this seat to symbolize his confidence and aggression.
  • Jyotiraditya Scindia vs Digvijaya Singh: The two former colleagues turned rivals will clash in Guna constituency in Guna district. Scindia has been representing this seat since 2002 and has won it four times. Singh has chosen to contest this seat as a sign of his defiance and revenge.
  • Suresh Pachouri vs Narottam Mishra: The two senior leaders will compete in the Datia constituency in the Datia district. Pachouri is a former Union minister and a close aide of Kamal Nath. Mishra is a cabinet minister and a close aide of Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
  • Arun Yadav vs Kailash Vijayvargiya: The two young leaders will fight in the Khargone constituency in Khargone district. Yadav is a former Union minister and a former state Congress president. Vijayvargiya is a national general secretary of the BJP and a former state BJP president.

The Madhypradesh Election 2023 is a high-stakes and high-drama affair that will decide the fate of the state and the nation. The voters of Madhya Pradesh have a tough choice to make between the BJP and the Congress, who are leaving no stone unturned to woo them. The election will also test the popularity and credibility of the leaders of both parties, who are putting their reputations and careers on the line. The election will also set the tone and mood for the next Lok Sabha polls, just a few months away.
