Brij Bhushan Singh’s Political Tightrope: Navigating Controversies and BJP’s Strategic Quandary

Amidst Legal Battles and Electoral Risks, Unraveling the Enigma's Impact on BJP's Future

In the maze of Indian politics, one figure emerges as an enigma and a linchpin for the BJP—Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the formidable six-time MP from Kaiserganj. His recent confidant’s victory in the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) echoes Singh’s enduring influence, underscored by a slogan at his celebratory gathering: “Dabdaba to hai, dabdaba to rahega. Yeh to bhagwan ne de rakha hai (influence prevails and will continue. God has given this influence).”

Despite facing sexual harassment allegations earlier this year, Singh remains a force to be reckoned with, actively participating in party events and parliamentary proceedings. But who is Brij Bhushan Singh?

Brij Bhushan Singh’s Multifaceted Persona

A multifaceted figure, Singh, a six-time MP with roots in BJP and SP, commands authority in eastern UP politics. Known as a ‘dabang neta’ (strongman), he holds over 50 educational institutions across several districts. His connection with Ayodhya’s akharas and involvement in the Ram Janmabhoomi movement bolstered his image, earning steadfast support from local priests.

Singh’s popularity stems from not only his political clout but also his philanthropic endeavours. He runs numerous colleges, offering fee waivers to economically disadvantaged students. His grand birthday celebration includes a student talent search with rewards ranging from motorbikes to cash, fostering goodwill among constituents.

The Political Asset: Brij Bhushan Singh and BJP’s Fortunes

For the BJP, Singh is not just a leader but a political asset with significant influence. He ensures victories in Kaiserganj and impacts adjoining constituencies like Gonda and Bahraich. Despite the controversy, the party has given him a long rope, wary of losing his crucial support.

A UP BJP leader emphasized Singh’s pivotal role: “He wields influence in his constituency and adjoining seats. He cannot be ignored.” Another party leader added that if the BJP does not give a ticket to Singh, it may field one of his family members, highlighting the party’s dependence on his political legacy.

An RSS functionary in UP added a layer: “After this controversy, Singh has become a gale ki haddi (an inconvenience) for the BJP. If the BJP denies him the ticket, he may join any other party to win, and the BJP will lose a seat. Singh influences Kaiserganj, Shravasti, Basti, and Ayodhya Lok Sabha constituencies. He cannot be ignored.”

Legal Quandaries: Pending Cases and Complexities

The pending sexual harassment cases against Singh loom large, with two FIRs registered in April. However, recent developments indicate a complex legal landscape. The Delhi Police filed a substantial chargesheet against Singh but also sought the cancellation of a POCSO case after the minor and her father withdrew their allegations. The legal proceedings are set to resume in January.

The twists and turns in Singh’s legal battles complicate the BJP’s strategic dilemma. On the one hand, the chargesheet suggests a severe legal entanglement, but on the other, the withdrawal of allegations by the minor and her father introduces an element of ambiguity. The BJP treads cautiously, aware that Singh’s legal fate intertwines with his political clout.

Haryana’s Wrestling Dilemma: Potential Political Repercussions

The big question for the BJP is whether Singh’s controversies will have a cascading effect, especially in Haryana. While the BJP dismisses the possibility of a backlash among Jats, Singh’s association with the WFI and the political landscape in Haryana pose challenges. Wrestling is deeply embedded in Haryana’s culture, and sentiments against the BJP might grow if the Opposition effectively exploits the issue.

Wrestling holds immense cultural significance in Haryana, and the state boasts a rich history of producing world-class wrestlers. Singh’s alleged involvement in sexual harassment cases has stirred sentiments among the wrestling community. While the BJP downplays the potential impact, insiders acknowledge that the issue might resonate more deeply than anticipated, especially among Jats, who constitute about 28% of Haryana’s population.

A BJP leader in Haryana expressed confidence, stating, “As far as sentiments of Jats are concerned, the BJP has honored the community by getting Jagdeep Dhankar elected Vice President.” However, another leader voiced concern, stating, “Wrestlers are in almost every village of Jat-dominated Haryana. There is sentiment in the community against the BJP for inaction against Brij Bhushan. Now after the win of his associate for the WFI post, Singh may have his influence in the WFI. People here in Haryana will not like this, and this situation can harm the party in the Assembly polls next year if the Opposition raises the issue properly.”

Jats constitute about 28% of Haryana’s population (a quarter of the electorate). Barring northern Haryana, the Jats have strongholds everywhere else in the state.

Navigating the Tumultuous Terrain

As we unravel the complexities surrounding Brij Bhushan Singh, the political landscape stands at a crossroads, fraught with challenges and strategic dilemmas for both the BJP and Singh himself. Singh, often seen as an enigmatic linchpin, remains an undeniable force in eastern UP, his influence transcending political controversies.

For the BJP, Singh symbolizes more than a mere leader; he represents a delicate equilibrium between electoral victories and potential backlash. The party’s decision to extend him a long rope underscores the recognition of his sway in Kaiserganj and the adjoining constituencies. However, this calculated risk raises questions about the delicate balance between loyalty and public perception.

The legal difficulties surrounding Singh’s alleged involvement in sexual harassment cases further complicate the narrative. While a chargesheet looms large, the withdrawal of allegations introduces a layer of ambiguity. The BJP treads cautiously, acutely aware that Singh’s legal fate is intricately entwined with his political clout.

As the political drama unfolds, the spotlight shifts to Haryana, where the echoes of Singh’s controversies reverberate. The wrestling community, deeply rooted in the state’s culture, watches closely. The potential repercussions among Jats, a significant voter base, could pose unforeseen challenges for the BJP in the upcoming Assembly polls.

Both Singh and the BJP face a pivotal moment in navigating this tumultuous terrain. The party must weigh the short-term gains of Singh’s influence against the long-term risks of potential electoral repercussions. On the other hand, Singh finds himself at the intersection of legacy and accountability, where political prowess and legal intricacies converge.

The enigma of Brij Bhushan Singh is a microcosm of the broader challenges political entities grapple with—balancing the allure of influential leaders with the need for accountability. As the story unfolds, the BJP and Singh must navigate this intricate dance, aware that every move shapes their destinies and their political landscape.
