Simplified Process for NRIs: Adding Local UAE Address to Indian Passports

Enhancing Convenience with a Step-by-Step Guide

For Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) residing in the UAE, incorporating their local address into their Indian passports has become a streamlined process, offering enhanced convenience. NRI Passport Update allows Indian citizens abroad without a valid or permanent address in India to enlist their UAE address. The service was introduced in 2020, and only a few are aware of its existence. Here’s a step-by-step guide for NRIs in the UAE:

Step 1: Application for a New Passport

To add the local UAE address, NRIs must apply for a new passport. The change cannot be made in existing passports, as clarified by the Indian Consulate.

Step 2: Filling the Application

Applicants can complete the application personally at BLS International Services UAE or online through the ‘Passport Seva at Indian Embassies and Consulates’ portal. If applying in person, visit a BLS centre, request the EAP II form, and complete it. If applying online, fill out the form for ‘re-issue an ordinary passport with a new address’ and finalize the process at a BLS centre.

Step 3: Providing Address Information and Police Verification

Visit the BLS centre to submit the form and provide your local UAE address for printing on the passport. Additionally, furnish one Indian address for mandatory police verification, which can be a parent’s or relative’s address.

Step 4: Document Submission for Proof of Address

Submit the following documents to prove residency in the UAE:

1. Original valid passport.

2. Registered tenancy contract or title deed for owned property (occupied for over a year).

3. Valid Emirates ID.

4. Utilities bill from the respective electricity and water authority.

Current passport submission is also required. Once approved, both the previous and new passports are delivered via courier.

Step 5: Payment of Fees

The overall service cost, including the courier fee, is Dh415 for standard BLS centres and Dh650 for premium BLS lounges.

Processing Time

The service takes 10 to 15 working days, subject to approval from the Consulate General of India. Applicants receive an SMS notification upon completion.
